After descending into a small jungle encrusted crater, one comes upon the entrance to the Thurston Lava Tube within Volcanoes National Park. The tunnel was formed by lava leaving the crater on its way toward Hilo sometime before 1790, when the Kilauea caldera collapsed to his current position.
