Halemaumau is the legendary home of Pele, Goddess of Hawaiian volcanoes. In 1924, the crater was 1500 feet wide and filled nearly to the brim with molten lava. But, over a span of three months, the lava drained away and the subsiding lava and subsequent steam explosions enlarged the crater to 3000 feet in diameter. Since 1924, numerous eruptions have filled in the crater. The latest eruption, in 1967, filled the crater to within 100 feet of the rim. The crater is now 3000 feet across and about 280 feet deep.
