GMT at the Old Royal Observatory (512x773)I can think of nothing more appropriate to a standards meeting than a visit to the Old Royal Observatory at Greenwich—the home of the standards for time, distance, longitude and latitude since 1675. In the photo to the left is the Greenwich Meridian, 0° 00' 00" which divides the eastern and western hemispheres. Greenwich was established as the initial meridian, by the way, by a vote of 22-1-2 in 1884 because the US had already adopted it as such and because it inconvenienced the least number of users. To the right is the electric Shepherd 24-hour clock, installed at the Observatory in 1852. And below is a plate establishing the standard English measurements.British standards of distance at Greenwich (782x312)
