White Tower over Traitor's Gate from across the Thames (896x512)
White Tower, the massive rectangular fortress at the center of the Tower of London, is the oldest medieval building at the Tower of London. It was constructed about 1078 as the castle keep for William the Conqueror. It is the oldest and largest building of this type in England. Traitor's Gate, foreground, was constructed by Edward I about 1278 to provide accommodations for the King and a new water entrance. It is referred to as "Traitor's Gate" because of the number of prisoners accused of treason who supposedly passed surreptitiously through it—most notably Queen Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas More.
