At Glendalough (pronounced 'glendalock') in the Wicklow mountains stands the ruins of an ancient monastic settlement beside two dark lakes overshadowed by the sheer walls of a deep valley. The monastery, founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century, grew to be one of the most important monasteries in Ireland, surviving Viking raids in the 9th and 10th centuries and an English incursion in 1398.
